Central Pennsylvania Blood Bank

History & Founding

Central Pennsylvania Blood Bank (CPBB) was incorporated in 1960 by local physicians and community leaders who recognized the need for an organization dedicated to managing the region’s blood supply.

CPBB is a nonprofit organization recognized as tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Its IRS tax-exempt status dates to May 1966.

Central Pennsylvania Blood Bank is headquartered at 8167 Adams Drive, Hummelstown, Pennsylvania 17036.

Our Mission

Central Pennsylvania Blood Bank is a not-for-profit, community-based blood program committed to providing a quality blood supply, responsive to community needs, in a cost-effective manner.

CPBB works throughout Central Pennsylvania to recruit blood donors, collect and process blood and blood products, and provide lifesaving blood products to hospitals and patients throughout the region.

Who We Serve

Central Pennsylvania Blood Bank serves communities throughout Central Pennsylvania and is the primary blood supplier for 28 hospitals across 16 counties.

CPBB provides convenient opportunities for individuals to donate through donor centers and through corporate, community, school, church, civic, and other mobile blood drives throughout its service area.

Every donated unit undergoes processing, testing, and labeling in accordance with applicable U.S. Food and Drug Administration requirements. Blood donations can provide multiple lifesaving components, including red blood cells, platelets, and plasma, for patients undergoing surgery, cancer treatment, trauma care, and treatment for other serious medical conditions.

Leadership

Central Pennsylvania Blood Bank is guided by an experienced executive leadership team and an independent Board of Directors committed to advancing the organization’s mission and serving communities throughout Central Pennsylvania.

Patrick Bradley — President and Chief Executive Officer
Patrick Bradley has served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Central Pennsylvania Blood Bank since 2007. He provides overall leadership and strategic direction for the organization and works closely with CPBB’s executive team and Board of Directors to support the blood supply needs of hospitals and communities throughout the region.

Michelle Tompkins — Chief Operating Officer
Michelle Tompkins serves as Chief Operating Officer of Central Pennsylvania Blood Bank and has been a member of CPBB’s executive leadership team for more than a decade. She helps oversee day-to-day operations and supports blood collection and blood services throughout Central Pennsylvania, working closely with the President-CEO and other members of the executive team to help ensure CPBB continues to meet the needs of hospitals, patients, donors, and communities throughout the region.

Partnerships

Central Pennsylvania Blood Bank is a member of America’s Blood Centers (ABC), the national organization representing independent, community-based blood centers across the United States and Canada.

CPBB is also a member of the Alliance for Community Transfusion Services (ACTS), a collaborative alliance of independent nonprofit blood centers that share resources, expertise, and blood services capabilities to strengthen the community blood supply.
